Behind every place lie stories, gastronomic traditions, artisanal flavors and time-honored practices, preserved by women and men whose identities and cultures have been constructed over centuries.

Slow Food Travel offers a new model for tourism, made up of meetings and exchanges with farmers, cheesemakers, herders, butchers, bakers and winegrowers who, along with the chefs who cook their products, will be the narrators of their local areas and unique guides to the local traditions.

The aim is to bring travellers closer to the preservation of food biodiversity and an understanding of local cultures, identities and gastronomies. Journeys will often include visits to Slow Food Presidia, encounters with Ark of Taste products and stays with Terra Madre food communities.

Hospitality will be offered directly by the producers or by hoteliers and chefs who use local “good, clean and fair” ingredients in their kitchens.

1st day

Arrival and meeting at the airport. Transfer to Kolasin. Accommodation in hotel or private apartments, depending on guest wishes. On the way to Kolasin stop at the Moraca monastery. Dinner in the restaurant Savardak – national dish Kacamak. Overnight.

2nd day

After breakfast transfer to Lipovo village in Sinjajevina mountain. Transfer can be with jeeps all the way to katun, or with mini bus so that the clients can hike app 2 hours to the katun (shepherds hut in the mountain). Depending on time of the year, we can pick mountain berries, help in lunch preparation etc. For lunch ladies from the katun will prepare a lot of national dishes using the food they grew in the mountain using wood stove…After lunch hiking back to the mini bus or transfer with jeeps directly to accommodation. Free time.

3rd day

After breakfast transfer to village Kukulje in Bijelo Polje. (app 1.20 hour.) Visit to a private household where the owners grow raspberries, strawberries, have old breeds of sheep, chicken, turkey… They have 4 springs at their property and all the food and preserve they make they make it from their own vegetables and animals. It is one of the rare completely sustainable households. It is possible to organize direct transfer to next place, or as we recommend walking /hiking app 2 hours to the place from where the minibus can await for us. Next is visit to a herbalist in Rasovo village and after that half an hour of transfer to village Tomasevo and a private household where the special Layered cheese is produced. Presentation of the way of production. Transfer back to Kolasin.

4th day

After breakfast transfer to mountain Cakor with jeep. Again a walking part can be organized or clients can be driven directly to a katuns. Katuns in mountain Cakor has become part of a new route called Katun road which promotes authentic way of life in Montenegro, homemade food and shows the real image of a life in the mountains. Transfer to town Plav. Visit to a Plav lake. Overnight in Plav.

5th day

After breakfast transfer to Ropojana valley, short walk 2km app in one direction, to a spring of river Skakavica, called Eye of Skakavica spring. From there visit to Alipasa’s springs, beautiful spot where the sky and mountains and river are dancing together under the light of the sun. Transfer to Grebaja valley, which is often compared to Swiss alps. High sharp peaks are almost completely surrounding the peaceful valley. From there transfer to Bajrovica katun, high in the mountains, app 1750m of altitude for a homemade food and overnight in the wooden huts.

6th day

After breakfast, we will hike through the forest to the highest lake in the Montenegro, where stories about beautiful fairies are told through many generations. Hike to the lake and back will last app 2.5-3h depending on the groups physical condition. After the activity transfer to the village Lubnice near Berane town, overnight in the authentic house, 100 years old but refurbished. Homemade food, honey, juices, jams….Overnight.

7th day

After breakfast transfer to mountain village in Bjelasica mountain, but across Jelovica mountain, partly through the forest partly across meadows. In village Vranjak we will enjoy horseback riding and wonderful mountain food – refreshing soups, homemade bread…

After activity, transfer to Kolasin, or if the flight schedule is early in the morning, then transfer to Podgorica for an overnight. End of program or:

8th day

After breakfast transfer to airport, or if the flight time is later in the afternoon then city tour in Podgorica, visit to Virpazar and Skadar lake (special type of fish that grows only there – ukljeva, local wine….) Transfer to airport. End of program.

KATUN ROAD MONTENEGRO - BOOK YOUR PLACE NOW!

The katuns are active from mid- May till mid September, when farmers move back to their villages. As in all other katuns, the whole life here is dedicated to caring for cattle and to cheese making.
